Stockport is a large market and industrial town in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester city centre, north of Macclesfield, east of Trafford and south-west of Tameside, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey. Built in 1840, the viaduct’s 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey.
